Jean Mensa is a Ghanaian lawyer and politician who currently serves as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana. She was appointed to the position in 2018, succeeding Charlotte Osei. Prior to her appointment as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mensa served as the Executive Director of the Institute of Economic Affairs, a Ghanaian think tank that focuses on policy research and advocacy.

Mensa has also served as a member of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Board and the Minerals Commission Board. She has been recognized for her work in promoting good governance and electoral integrity in Ghana, receiving awards such as the African Leadership Magazine’s African Female Person of the Year in 2018 and the Ghana Women of Excellence Award for Public Sector Leadership in 2020.

Mensa holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Ghana and a Master of Arts degree in Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in the United States.

Jean Adukwei Mensa is a Ghanaian lawyer and Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana. Prior to assuming the role of Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa spent an 18-year career at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) rising to the position of Executive Director and playing a pivotal role in strengthening Ghana’s democracy and promoting strong institutions.

Jean Mensa Early Life

Jean Adukwei Mensah was born on November 12,1971 in Accra to a Ga-Adangbe and Fante parents. She is half Ga-Adangbe from Ada in the Greater Accra Region and half Fante from the Central Region. Her father is Mr. Jacob Amekor Blukoo-Allotey.

Jean Mensa Education

Mrs. Adukwei Mensa had her basic education at Accra Ridge Church School and Proceeded to St. Mary’s Senior High School for her secondary education.

She is an Alumni of the University of Ghana, Faculty of Law, and received her degree in 1993. She was called to the Bar in 1995.

Jean Mensa Career

Jean Mensah was named as the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana after Madam Charlotte Osei was axed from office on 23rd January 2018. Her quest for democracy for the past two decades made her a leader in Policy research and advocacy.

In 2012, she was involved in the Presidential Transition Act, the Revised 1992 Constitution of Ghana, the Political Parties Funding Bill, and the Revised Political Parties Bill.

Jean Mensah was sworn in by the President of Ghana, Akuffo Addo though some people wanted the whole process to be halted as a result challenging the removal of the former EC’s chairperson.

Prior to working at the IEA which organized Ghana’s Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates, as well as Town Hall Meetings for parliamentary candidates, Mrs. Mensa also worked at Amarkai Amarteifio Chambers (1995-1997) and BJ Da Rocha Chambers as a Junior Lawyer (1998)

Jean Mensa is the wife of Dr. Charles Mensa who is the C.E.O and Chairman of the Institute Of Economic Affairs. The couple is blessed with three children.

In 2013, She won the Excellent Award by the EXLA Group, Young Professionals Role Model in Governance Award in 2014, and was ranked as one of the Top 60 outstanding, Inspiring, and hardworking corporate women leaders in Ghana.
