Mrs Bawumia was virtually unknown in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) until her husband, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was chosen by the then flag bearer of NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, as his running mate for the 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections respectively.
