Samira Bawumia grew up in the Northern Region of Ghana, where she had her primary and secondary education. She later attended the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Science, with a concentration in Law and Sociology. She also holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Ghana.
Samira Bawumia has been actively involved in politics since 2008. She was a member of the National Campaign Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 general elections. In 2016, she was appointed as the wife of the Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, after the NPP won the election.

Mrs Bawumia was virtually unknown in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) until her husband, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia was chosen by the then flag bearer of NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, as his running mate for the 2008, 2012, and 2016 elections respectively.
The second lady rose to prominence during the 2016 Presidential & Parliamentary elections in Ghana which saw Nana Addo Danqwah Akufo-Addo defeat the then President John Dramani Mahama to become the next president of Ghana.
